NY TIMES ARTICLE: Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
In the corporate world, “use it or lose it” often pertains to vacation days, but in this NY Times article by Jane E. Brody the emphasis is on skeletal muscle. Why? Because of a condition called sarcopenia.
According to Brody, sarcopenia is “a decline in skeletal muscle with age. It begins as early as age 40 and, without intervention, gets increasingly worse, with as much as half of muscle mass lost by age 70.” Curious what it’s replaced by? “Fat and fibrous tissue, making muscles resemble a well-marbled steak.”
