People Power

Dear Practice Friends,

I want to bring you up to speed on some wonderful people who are joining the Practice staff this month.

Our two apprentices, Matt Parente and Aly Payne have made great progress during the first phase of their apprenticeship and last Friday passed the first of two in-house exams on their way toward their full STOTT PILATES certification. This first exam tests their abilities to perform the essential and intermediate repertoire as well as a ton of memorization of anatomy, exercises, modifications, target muscles, and breath patterns. They now formally enter join the Practice staff as paid instructors, charging half-price to clients for private sessions and group classes. The next phase of their apprenticeship will have them focused generally on improving their teaching skills, and specifically on programming effectively for clients in both private and group settings.

Both Aly and Matt will begin to fill in for other instructors periodically so you may have a chance to work with them, and during this time your sessions will be at the 50% discounted rate. Working with apprentices is also a great way to pick up an extra session during the week for yourself at a really good value. If you are interested in working with Aly or Matt, simply reply to this email and let me know and I will follow up with you.

IMG_2419We also have a new apprentice starting at the studio this week. Teresa DiCarlo is a graduate of UD in exercise science who has recently returned to Dayton from her hometown near Atlanta, and is excited to be back in the Gem City and especially looking forward to becoming a Practice instructor!
Teresa has already been through STOTT PILATES mat work and reformer training in Atlanta, garnering observation and practice experience there, and will be joining with Matt and Aly to move through the apprenticeship program. She will teach a complimentary mat class this month, the date is still TBA, but check in with me if you are interested.

Sound good so far? But wait, there’s more!

Joan Wire head shotI’m thrilled to announce that Joan Wire, a long time member of the Practice Community, and has recently completed her 200-hour teacher training in Baron Baptiste Power Yoga through Ignite Yoga in Dayton and will begin to offer a Power Flow Yoga class on Tuesday evenings at 7p (see below for a class description).

Joan is a registered dietitian who has spent the last 20 years focusing on health and well-being. She has worked in Cardiology and the Wellness Center at Miami Valley Hospital in addition to providing private counseling and weight management classes. Yoga and meditation have been an important part of her own wellness routine. Joan is a certified Chopra Center meditation instructor and is excited to share her both Primordial Sound Meditation and power yoga with the Dayton area. Joan is a full time mom of three very active teenagers. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband traveling and spending time outdoors doing anything from hiking and biking to kayaking. If you are interested in trying out Joan’s Power Flow class this month, your first session will be free.

While I am proud of the studio space we’ve created and the fact that we keep it nice for you, it really is the amazing people that come together in the space that makes Practice special, and to that end I want to say we are really fortunate to have Joan, Teresa, Matt and Aly on board with us because they are also really amazing. They have passion, talent, rich life experience and love making a difference with the people in their community. I am excited for you to work with them, and I hope you will join me in welcoming them in their new roles with Practice Fitness.

Best wishes,

Patrick Przyborowski

Yoga and Strength Training Bring Creativity to the Table
Thanks goes to Ed Hughes, who sent us this article by Jen Murphy from the Wall Street Journal giving a snapshot of a successful businessman in NYC who combines training modalities in a way that helps foster his creativity.
A 2-Minute Walk May Counter the Harms of Sitting
From our favorite wellness Columnist Gretchen Reynolds in the NY Times Phys Ed section:
“A new study offers some helpful perspective, suggesting that even a few minutes per hour of moving instead of remaining in a chair might substantially reduce the harms of over sitting.”
Intermittent Fasting
The practice of intermittent fasting has been around for hundreds of years, but has gained a lot of traction not only from the practitioners of the Paleolithic Diet, but from some very respected research scientists as well.
Michael Kunesh forwarded me this video presentation of Mark Mattson, PhD, a senior researcher for the National Institute on Aging, from a TEDx event at Johns Hopkins University, in which he talks generally about the benefits of intermittent fasting, but also specifically on using it as a preventative strategy for staving off dementia and cognitive decline.
