Practice News and Calendar October (2012)

Dear Practice Friends,

Earlier in the month, Joy Karl was kind enough to send me a link related to Pilates that I want to share with you. Marguerite Ogle, a Pilates instructor and wellness coach eloquently compares elements of the Pilates method to the qualities of different animals:

One paragraph in particular really jumped out at me, related to working on Pilates equipment:

“Just as with a horse and rider, we’re not out to muscle through a workout. We don’t want to just overpower the equipment. Pilates offers more nuanced fitness than that. Whether we work with small equipment like circles, balls and bands or the larger equipment like the reformer, a chair or barrel, there is a relationship that needs to happen between your body and the equipment. Like a good rider, you have to listen.”

I couldn’t agree more. Taking the time, and making the effort, to listen to your body and feel the impact that the apparatus has on your core as well as your limbs can greatly improve the efficacy of your workout.

Listen also to the cues that the instructors at Practice give. You may notice that we are continually trying to encourage you to move mindfully, intentionally, with a heightened awareness of the muscles that are working and a sense of increased self-control. These encouraging cues reflect a commitment to the basic principles that act as a foundation, not just for the organization, but for practice as a whole: awareness, focus, self-discipline and creativity.

New Classes

And just a reminder about our new class offerings:

The Group Reformer & Equipment class on Thursday evenings at 630p taught by Leslie will continue throughout October. The Group Reformer & Equipment class at 1230p on Thursday will conclude October 4th.
Practice Exclusive: Piloxing

Piloxing uniquely mixes Pilates and boxing moves into a fat burning, muscle sculpting, core-centric interval workout, guaranteed to whip you into shape, using a class format that’s both fun and challenging. Leslie is the only instructor in the Dayton area that has been trained to teach this style and we are the first studio in town to offer it. Come check it out on Thursdays at 6pm.

Research: For weight Loss, Less Exercise may be more

From Greatchen Reynolds in the NY Times “Well” column, comes encouraging news based on results from a recent Danish study which “found that exercise does seem to contribute to waist-tightening, provided that the amount of exercise is neither too little nor, more strikingly, too much.” Check it out:
